Imposter syndrome can cast a shadow on the path to success, and as a business coach I hear women business owners talk about the opportunity crushing fear that wreaks havoc with their professional life and how costly it is on their business. I would be lying if I didn't admit to my own wrestle with this dragon. So as I ponder my own adventure, in this blog post, I'd like to share some of the things that are working for me. Hopefully, there is a practical strategies to help you unveil your true potential with a combination of grit and glam because you have the power to conquer the doubt dragon!
First Understanding the Doubt Dragon
You are NOT alone! Imposter syndrome often stems from a distorted perception of one's achievements and abilities. As a business owner, it's crucial to recognize that these feelings are common and can be overcome. The doubt dragon thrives on negativity and lack of oxygen, so let's starve it with positivity and a lot of press!
Grit- Building Resilience in Business
Grit is the backbone of success. Begin by throwing a dart at the dragon. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow instead of failure. As you do your ability to bounce back builds resilience. Setbacks become stepping stones. Be willing to be vulnerable and share stories of your setbacks and triumphs with your team and clients, fostering a culture of resilience.
Last year I had a client struggling to lead their new management team. Weekly meetings turned into gripe sessions full of negativity and beating each other up. I asked each manager bring a "Chopportunity" to share with the group during their weekly meeting. In other words, how did their group turn a challenge into an opportunity that week? At first the answers, were shallow and short, but as they learned to flip the script and develop a habit of seeing challenges as opportunities to teach, lead, solve and grow, negative meetings turned into celebrations of their achievements, and brain storming sessions as departments started working together. My client became a leader of leaders not managers. Building a resilient mindset is a key aspect of overcoming imposter syndrome.
Glam- Embracing Confidence with Style
Glam is not just about appearance; it's an attitude. Swagger! Embracing confidence in both your personal and professional life is a learned response when dealing with the imposter dragon. Think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Glamming up can put you in a place where you can project confidence you may not feel on the inside. As time goes on and you are successful in your endeavors real self-assurance will develop. But just like her character, it can some crashing down when you aren't mentally prepared for a sideways comment or action. Does that mean you aren't capable? No! Step back, assess and decide what you need to work on. For her it was going back to school and creating a life more authentic to her. For me, it was creating responses I could practice until I sounded confident talking about myself at networking events, then I developed a few questions to ask so I could get others talking and learn more about them - which is what I was really there for.
Break down long-term goals into smaller, achievable tasks. By setting realistic goals, you can build a track record of success, eroding the doubt dragon's influence. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small, and emphasize the progress made. Remind yourself of the hard work, dedication, and skills that have led to your success.
Wisdom - The Dragon's Kryptonite
In the quest to conquer the doubt dragon, wisdom plays a pivotal role. Wisdom is cultivated through a commitment to ongoing education. Investing in professional development, attending workshops, conferences, and staying updated on industry trends will not only enhance your expertise but you will also gain the wisdom to confront challenges with confidence.
By incorporating wisdom into your skills toolbox you can elevate your mindset, effectively silencing the doubt dragon and paving the way for sustainable success in your personal and entrepreneurial endeavors
As a final note of advice, I believe building a strong support system to navigate the your entrepreneurial journey is paramount to your success. Surround yourself with a supportive network. Share your feelings with trusted colleagues, friends, or a mentor. They can provide valuable insights, reassurance, and perspective.
Remember, overcoming imposter syndrome is an ongoing process. Be patient with yourself, give yourself the needed tools and support, and remember to celebrate the journey of personal and professional growth.
